SUMMARY:August 11th - Hannah Jumper and The Hatchet Gang: Revisited
DESCRIPTION:By now most Rockport stalwarts know the story of Hannah Jumper and the Hatchet Gang; or do they? In this presentation Anne will present the Hatchet Gang to newcomers and long time residents.\, We revisit Hannah’s personal story updating her image from  prissy “Church Lady” to an activist ready to take up arms to defend her community against increasing havoc in their homes and drunken brawling in the streets.  Was Hannah a busybody out to ruin the good times for the guys; or  was she a strong leader with the courage of her convictions? \nYou decide based on new interpretations.\n\n\n\nAugust 11 @ 7pm at the Rockport Public Library\nThe presentation is free to all and snacks will be available.\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\nAnne graduated from Endicott College with a degree in Hotel/Tourism Management which led to an exciting career as a tour manager traveling the world for years working on every continent except Antarctica. She prepped for each tour by studying the destination’s history and architecture in addition to tourist hot spots. Anne has volunteered extensively with Historic Salem\, the Sawyer Free Library’s Mapping Memories oral history project. She founded and administered the Magnolia Historical Society’s popular speaker program. She is happily working to protect Gloucester’s historic properties from development. She enjoys living in Magnolia with her husband and a finicky cat.

SUMMARY:May 12th | Boat Building in Rockport and Waddell’s Boat Yard
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sandy Bay Historical Society at the Rockport Public Library on Tuesday\, May 12\, 2026 @ 7:00 PM for \nBoat Building in Rockport and Waddell’s Boat Yard\nThe program is about Dave Waddell and boat building in Rockport from around 1900-1950. Rockport\, mainly the Waddell yard\, launched over 50 vessels during that time that made it into the List of Merchant Vessels of the United States published annually by the federal government. One of Waddell’s builds survives today as Surprise in the Maine tourist fleet. Another\, Blanche Ring\, although short lived\, was the first of what would become a major change in the design of the Gloucester fishing fleet. \nPresented by: Charley Seavey \nCharley Seavey moved to Rockport as a wee lad in 1947. After graduating from UMass he went on a 50 year walkabout and finally returned to Rockport in 2018. Since then he’s been active in town affairs\, including election to the Housing Authority. He spent six years as a volunteer at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum\, where\, among other things he did major revisions and additions to the museum’s List of Vessels built in Essex https://www.essexshipbuilding.org/vessel-list. This presentation grew out of a desire to have a similar list for Rockport.
