On Saturday morning, June 7th at 9AM, the Sandy Bay Historical Society (SBHS), along with the Rockport DPW, unveiled the restored sign at the Old First Parish Cemetery at 8 Beach Street.
The DPW generously paid for the sign restoration in collaboration with the SBHS plan to clean, restore, and repair the over 500 grave stones in place.
SBHS restoration committee co-chairs, Richard Fitzpatrick and Andrea Quinn, along with the SBHS board of directors, were privileged to be joined by a number of special guests. Senator Bruce Tarr spoke and referenced his ancestor, Jabez Tarr, buried in the cemetery, as the youngest soldier in the Battle of Bunker Hill, June 17, 1775. Laura Evans, Rockport Select Board member, read the poem “Old First Parish Burial Ground”. Additionally, restoration expert Rob Surabian, of “Gravesite Preservation”, was on hand to instruct volunteers on ecological friendly cleaning techniques. |
